Been interesting browsing the thrift stores; always check out the books, CDs, and DVDs...I found one titled, "Word Power Made Easy" copywrited in 1949 and revised in 1978. Speak and write with confidence, develop social contacts, increase your earning power... etymology - the origin or derivation of words
First page is test your vocabulary, similar to the word quizzes in Reader's Digest. Example - dishelved - a-untidy, b-fierce, c-foolish, d-pecul'ar (as spelled), e-unhappy? a-untidy; goes on for 15 words - baffling problem - c-puzzling and so forth. I was ok so far.
Is it pleasant to be a recipient of a beneficent act? yes
bonus, bene - good, well
A superintendent collects the rent -thus you avoid superintendant.
all right not alright, whatever it means
It goes deeper by the time you finish 526 pages; my first thought there were many words that required extra reading. According to writing advice, you need to maintain a level that keeps readers interested.
I picked up a travel book, "Charles Kuralt's America" - 1995 about his travels in America from 1967 - 1994. 37 years of on the road and on Sunday Morning. I loved watching his show and to this day, still look forward to the program and their artistic suns.
Bought Tom Brokaw's "Boom" about life in the sixties and how it affects today. Women just coming of age were "both witness to and part of a new determination.. with collective action.. Listen to me. I won't take this any longer."
Finally, a 1986 copy of "Hansen and Gretel". Printed and bound in Brazil. As I said, "Interesting scores."
